The Comedy Formula

Hmmm...what's funny today? Humor still seems to top the list, followed closely by comedy, funniness, and of course buffoonery. But what makes something funny?

Maybe it's the context of an event. For example, seeing a man being shot in the head would pretty much qualify as "not funny". However, if that guy were Bill Henderson from my office, it would definitely be deserving of a chuckle.

Maybe it's the delivery of a joke. "Chris, there seems to be an error in your calculations for this project" is just not very humorous. But change the timing and delivery a bit: "Chris, there seems to be a..." *BOOM!!* (Bill's lifeless body drops to the ground)...and now we've got funny!

Sometimes it's a recurring theme or phrase that gets the audience laughing. When I pull the trigger and declare my victory over the dick that is Bill Henderson, a single shot is not going to have people howling in amusement. It will take several bullets, and a montage of each impact from different angles to really drive the comedy point home. And maybe as the icing on the cake, I'll utter my catchphrase "Fuck you, Bill."
